Nars Makeup Cleansing Oil review
Nars Makeup Cleansing Oil review
When I discovered that Nars, one of my favorite makeup brands, also had a skincare line I was very eager to try it. I decided to start from the basics and got the Nars Makeup Oil Cleanser, since I consider removing makeup the first step in skincare. Only later I realized that this isn't actually from their "Nars Skin" line of products, which explains a lot.

I'm positive everyone and their moms know about Nars as a brand (at least if you're sliiightly into makeup). Everything I've tried from them have been absolutely great, so I was very excited to try this.

Nars claims that this oil cleanser is "an advanced achievement in removing makeup and impurities". It also is supposed to deep cleanse pores and prepare skin for the next skincare step. They claim that this is unique to cleansing oils and that their exclusive technology "enables the product to be effective when applied with wet or dry hands". The brand also indicates to use two to three pumps to remove makeup from face.

Nars Makeup Cleansing Oil comes in a very sturdy and sleek plastic bottle of 200ml, the design following the aesthetic their makeup products have. The cap has the "security system" integrated, with just having to twist it following the arrow to open it and in the other way to close it. From all the cleansing oils I've used, I think this is by far the best system to ensure no-leaking. All the previous ones I've written about, like the Innisfree Olive Real Cleansing Oil or the Klairs Black Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil has a plastic "thing" that you had to remove and then put back on.

The bottle comes in a black cupboard box that obviously follows the aesthetic of the makeup packaging. It was very well protected inside, with and additional "piece" of cupboard to offer more protection to the dispenser.

What probably surprised me the most of the Nars Makeup Oil Cleanser was the ingredient list. I don't even remember when was the last time I saw and ingredient list this short (and that I totally forgot to take photos off): mineral oil, PEG-8 glyceryl isosterate, cetyl ethylhexanoate, cyclopentasiloxane, isostearic acid, glyceryn, water, orange fruit extract, BHT, limonene.

I was always under the impression that mineral oil was bad, but a quick search on Paula's Choice website prove me wrong: mineral oil derives from petroleum (what I knew and why I thought it was bad) but turns out that after it's purified, it's very different from the original petroleum and isn't a source of contaminants. Mineral oil is also, according tot his website, very good at replenishing skin and moisturizing. Organizations in the USA and Britain classify mineral oil as "completely safe, soothing, non-sensitizing and perfectly beneficial for the skin". Although, I know some people suffer breakouts because of mineral oil. As with all "controversial" ingredients in skincare, ultimately is up to each person if they feel comfortable using it or not.

I always take these photos demonstration how makeup removers work before I use them on my face, so seeing how well a pump of the Nars Makeup Oil Cleanser removed the Tony Moly eyeliner and the Diorshow mascara I was more than excited to finally use it on my face.

However, I don't think I've been more disappointed in a product for a long time. I mean, if this cost 7-10€, I would have thought it was a good product quality-price wise, but it's not the case. I needed 4 pump to fully remove makeup from my face, and sometimes even an additional 2 for my eyes, depending on the amount of eye makeup I would wear. It also didn't remove liquid lipsticks as much as previous oil cleansers did. But the worst thing is that, sometimes I had to let oil cleanser for some seconds on the eyelid/eyelashes to let it dissolve the makeup and it was unbearable how painful it was when even the smallest amount got in my eyes. I felt my eyes burning, first time it happened I thought I was having an allergic reaction to it and totally freaked out.

The Nars Makeup Oil Cleanser is a very dry oil that I couldn't get used to. I always felt like it wasn't properly distributed on the face, and it barely emulsified, so I was also kind of paranoid that I wasn't removing all my makeup effectively.

I don't think this is on sale anymore, and for what I've read online (mostly negative reviews on its performance) I know I'm not the only one who thinks that this isn't a product Nars should have sold.

I was send this by strawberry.net for review purposes and I wasn't economically compensated to make this post. All opinions are my own and weren't influenced by the company that sent me the product.
